Gingin DHS Faction Swimming Carnival
The forecast for Wednesday is very hot. However we will still continue with the Faction Swimming Carnival! There will be some changes that will see students kept out of the sun as much as possible, for example when they are lining up for races.
Time & Location
14 Feb 2024, 9:30 am – 2:30 pm
Gingin Aquatic Centre, Gingin WA 6503, Australia
About the Event
It is strongly encouraged that all Primary students from Year 1 – 6 who can swim at least one lap (25m), generally stage 5 and above, in any or all strokes (freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly) support their Faction by nominating for either Division A OR B events in at least 1 or more of the available strokes. Parent/Guardian support may be necessary in completing the nomination form to indicate choices which reflect the interests & abilities of your child/children. Final approval of students participating in events who are BELOW STAGE 5 will be required by Karen Grant after swimming lessons have concluded.
Last year our swimming carnival was made COMPULSORY for High School students, which falls in line with mandatory participation in our Faction Cross Country and Athletics Carnival. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, only 2% of teenagers aged 13 to 17 meet the physical activity guidelines (at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day). We are encouraging all our young people to have a go, even if they may not be the best swimmers. If you or your child is unsure if they can swim 25m, please get in touch with the school and we can arrange a time for your child to be tested. Should your child be unable to participate, a note/medical certificate is required. High School students unable to swim, require a note from a parent/legal guardian and will attend as helpers on the day. Transport/consent form is still required to be handed in.
Fields for the championship (Division A) and non-championship (Division B) events for each stroke style will be established using the attached nomination sheet (primary/secondary)
Each competitor will be timed per event to establish placings in Division A events where nominations exceed 8 swimmers. Judging will occur in all Division B events and where Division A events have 8 or less swimmers.
Gingin District High School, as the hirer, has exclusive use of Gingin Aquatic Centre for the execution of the Swimming Carnival. Department liability limits swimming activities to student competitors and prohibits access to pools by other individuals. Spectators who remain at Gingin Aquatic Centre at the conclusion of the carnival are required to pay an entry fee for use of the pool.
LUNCH: The Student Council will be running a sausage sizzle throughout the duration of the carnival.
POOL CANTEEN: Snack foods and drinks will be available from the pool canteen. Students will not be allowed to purchase soft drinks or energy drinks during the carnival.
DRINKS: Students are required to supply their own drinks. They will be able to access the refrigerated water fountain at the aquatic centre.

END OF YEAR SPORTS STAR OF THE YEAR AWARD
At the End of Year Awards, a Primary and Secondary Sports Star of the Year award is given to the student who has accumulated the most points at faction and interschool carnivals (A division/championship) events only) throughout the year. I make students aware of this at the beginning of the year but if this is something you think your child would be aiming for, please encourage them to enter as many events as they can. Sometimes the difference could be as little as one event.
As our carnival is having to be held earlier this year due to circumstances out of our control, we would appreciate it if all forms could be handed in ASAP to allow time to complete the competitors list and all paperwork associated with the carnival. We understand that for parents/guardians of children in lower stages this may be difficult, so please nominate what you think your child is capable of and then on Friday once swimming lessons have concluded I will go through all nominations again and contact parents if necessary.
Please contact the school if you have any queries or concerns about the swimming carnival.
